5 Ways to Stay Organized, Save Money

Posted by kim on July 23, 2009

These tips to unclutter your life and reap the benefits came from this month’s All You Magazine (August 28th, 2009 issue, page 13), along with some of my own commentary…

1. Clear out unwanted stuff
Ask every family member to pick three to five items they no longer use. You can post them for sale on a free local bulletin board like Craigslist.org and/or Kijiji.com.  You can also donate your stuff to charity for a tax deduction. Check out Goodwill.org’s Valuation Guide of Material Donations to see how much you can deduct on your taxes. Personally, I plan to have a garage sale come late summer, and what doesn’t sell, I will donate to the Salvation Army.

2. Lighten up your car
Remove bicycle racks and car-top carriers when not in use as hauling unnecessary gear can decrease your fuel efficiency by 5% (five percent). Guess I should take those rocks out of my trunk, eh?

3. Manage your bills
Pay your bills at the same time every month to avoid late fees.  You can call your credit card company (or request online) to arrange a convenient due date.

4. Create a snack basket
Buying bottled water, sodas and snacks when on the run can become quite costly. Instead purchase such items in bulk and store in car or in a basket on your countertop to grab on your way out the door. I would think that storing in your car would contradict tip #2!? Also drinks would not stay cold, and some snacks would melt in the heat. But I agree on buying in bulk, as convenience store prices are outrageous!

5. Clean out your fridge
Once a week, take inventory. Look for persishables nearing expiration to use soon. And designate one shelf as “leftover central” so food doesn’t get shoved to the back and spoil.

All You consulted Jamie Novak for some of their tips.  Jamie is the author of The Get Organized Answer Book: Practical Solutions for 275 Questions on Conquering Clutter, Sorting Stuff, and Finding More Time and Energy, which is available for purchase from Amazon.com.

P.S. In case you haven’t gotten your August 2009 All You Magazine issue yet, Deal Seeking Mom has typed out the available manufacturer coupons ready to clip in this issue!
