How to set up a Mommy Blog

Posted by kim on March 16, 2010

My long time visitors know that I have been “blogging” long before the word “blog” was even invented.  I’ve been journaling my shopping sprees and personal experiences via e-newsletters and websites for over a decade now.  Many of you have helped me celebrate many milestones and comforted me during frustrating times, and it’s your support that has motivated me to continue.  And I thank you all for that.

Now, it seems like several “mommy blogs” are popping up everywhere as of lately, even getting a lot of press. For example, do you ever read Dooce.com (a blog by Heather Armstrong)? Funny stuff.

Anyway, yes, I’m a mom, and yes, I’m a blogger.  But I don’t really classify myself as a “mommy blogger”.  No offense to those that do. Or those that want to be a mommy blogger.  In fact, many people have asked me how to set up their own personal haven online.

So, what would I recommend for “mommies” (or anyone really) wanting to share their good fortunes or life’s mishaps?  Google offers Blogger.com which is totally free and very easy to use. And it’s a great place to play around and experiment.  But keep in mind that Google owns your content and can delete your pages at any given time, or even go out of business.  I doubt Google will ever go out of business, but they could close out Blogger, just like Yahoo bought out and closed Geocities.

I highly recommend registering your own domain name (I  suggest a registering a “.com” instead of a “.net”, “.biz”, etc.), and domain names are under $10/year.  Next set up a web site hosting account. The cheapest plan is usually all you will need unless your traffic soars beyond belief, and you do not need dedicated hosting at this time.  Then install your blog platform. Many domain hosting accounts offer Wordpress installs with a click of a mouse. If not, you can download Wordpress for free at WordPress.org.

Weathering the Nebraska Weather

Posted by kim on March 6, 2010

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of AccuWeather.
All opinions are 100% mine.

Every weekday morning, we go through the same routine at our house. After I wake up the girls – how is it that on school days they don’t want to get out of bed, but on weekends like today, they are up at the crack of dawn and won’t let me sleep in? Anyway – as they start to rustle around, I usually grab some breakfast (Kellogg’s Frosted Cherry Pop-tarts or toast with butter and strawberry jelly with a glass of milk is my fave) and go to check my email.

Then my youngest daughter will come into my office and ask what the day’s weather is going to be like so she knows how to dress accordingly.  She also plops down her glasses on my desk for me to clean as well.  I can pull up the weather forecast on my computer online at websites such as AccuWeather that display the current weather conditions.

For instance, it’s 36 degrees and cloudy at the moment I am writing this, but later today we may see occasional rain and drizzle (yuck) with a high of 44 degrees.  Tonight will be mostly cloudy with a low of 26 degrees. We are getting so sick of this icky weather here in Nebraska.  The kids have missed too many snow days already that they have tacked on extra days at the end of the school year to make up for them already!

Okay enough complaining about the weather, I have shopping deals to find, and it’s supposed to be sunny and warmer tomorrow!
