Prep & E-File Taxes for Free

It seems like I become the favorite family member come tax time, as I prepare their taxes in exchange for a some sort of plea bargain that doesn’t always get paid up.  I think I’m getting the short end of the stick. I don’t even do my own taxes!  My classmate, Kelly, from Lutz & Company, PC prepares my taxes as they are too complex for me. 

But if your adjusted gross income was $56,000 or less in 2008 (and not “too complex”), you can use a ”Free File Alliance Online Tax Preparation Company” as approved by the IRS to prepare AND e-file your taxes online for FREE!

I always use the TurboTax Free Edition - it offers free preparation, free printing and free federal efiling!

TurboTax.com will also compute your state taxes with a click of a button, but e-filing for state is not free.  It is a minimal amount ($25) and saves a ton of time.  But if you want to save your hard earned $$$, many states offer totally free filing (ie my state offers free internet filing at the Nebraska Department of Revenue website). Google your state to see if offer the same!

Now, I wonder if Congress will pass Obama’s Stimulus package legislation today…
